The main lodge, a rock-clad structure with thatched roofs, which was carefully designed to blend in with the natural surroundings, offering an expansively large wooden main deck area, an inside dining area, seated area with wooden fire places, a library, a boma and swimming pool area for the exclusive-use of our guests. The lighting up of the lodge in the evenings is always a special time and is a welcome sight when returning from the game drives. The lanterns, candles and fire places bathe the lodge is soft natural light as evening twilight makes way for night.
Inside Dining Area
The inside dining area is available for those cooler winter nights, where the large wooden fire roars while the chandelier above the yellow wooden dining table illuminates the area with the romantic glow of candles.
Outside Dining Area
Our outside dining area is on the main deck and is by far one of the favourite dining areas in the lodge. Meals on this deck can be enjoyed whilst observing the passing show provided by nature, with any number of animals being present on the plains or coming for a drink in one of the lodges’ water features. As night falls the darkness comes alive with the sounds of nature as the nocturnal animals, birds and frogs add their calls to the night.
Lodge Swimming Pool
The lodge swimming pool is a focal point during the hot Summer days. Conveniently close to the main lodge deck and slightly raised, it allows guests a beautiful view of the plains and the animals, whilst relaxing in the sparkling water. The pool is surrounded by a wooden deck, two large umbrellas and eight loungers, an ideal place to enjoy some relaxing hours before the next drive.
The outdoor Boma area will always remain a highlight of your stay. This outdoor dining area is situated a few steps past the swimming pool, providing an evening dining experience under the stars in a traditional African setting. The sandy ground surface and the aromas of the feast being prepared on the open coals make the Boma evenings most memorable… and who knows what could be wondering past or coming by for a drink at the water feature?

Our daily activities and meal times are flexible to best suit your family’s schedule, ensuring that you are relaxed and well rested in our luxury “home away from home”. Babysitting can be arranged at an additional fee, allowing parents to enjoy their dinner or drives, knowing that their little ones are being well looked after. With an electric fence, surrounding the rooms, children can walk freely between their rooms and the main lodge. The Family suite is ideally suited for families with children, this suite comprises two rooms connected with an internal walkway. Sterkfontein is the ideal place for the children to stretch their legs in a safe outdoor environment, be it on foot or on a bicycle.
Morning and / or Afternoon
Game drives depart from the lodge twice a day, one in the morning and again one later in the afternoon. The great advantage of the lodge being exclusive and ‘sole-use’ is that we are flexible with regards to game drive times. With years of experience in the area, our team will be able to best advise you on the optimum times to head out on drives.
The game drives are usually around three hours in duration, with a break during the drives to enjoy a fresh cup of coffee or something cooler in the evenings, accompanied with a light fresh snack prepared in our kitchen.
A night drive is a great way to experience the reserve after dark. An early dinner allows the opportunity to head out just after sunset and venture through the reserve, and with the selective help of a powerful spot light, try to spot some of the nocturnal creatures.
As night falls, the sounds of the bush change, and sitting under the stars with the vehicle and lights off, allows you to reconnect with nature – the surrounding bush comes alive with the call of the jackal or lion signalling their presence.
A day trip to the North of the reserve is a wonderful way to experience the diversity and changing landscapes in the reserve. A hearty breakfast is enjoyed at the lodge and then we leave the lodge for the day, driving for roughly 6 hours, heading to the areas of the reserve not normally seen on the regular game drives. This is an ideal opportunity to look for animals which we have not managed to find in the South of the reserve (giraffe for example).
A freshly packed lunch is enjoyed out in the bush while you get to stretch your legs around the vehicle. We arrive back at the lodge in the afternoon and this allows you to enjoy a sun downer around the fire, and to soak in the sounds, smells and twilight colours as the sun heads for the horizon.

Minimal fishing activities over the past 10 years have left all the dams well stocked with fish and offers a very rewarding fishing experience.
Bass are the main species caught in the waters, but there is also an abundance of endemic fish species which provide for a more challenging catch. Fishing rods and equipment are provided for our guests on the property.
Walking / Hiking
Having the freedom to walk in the bush allows you to get closer to nature without the disturbance of a game drive vehicle. On foot you are able to explore the flora and fauna one step at a time.
With open plains at the foot of enormous mountains, you can choose to take a casual relaxed walk or to hike up a mountain and be rewarded with one of the best views of the Waterberg. The viewing of the general game in the plains on foot will test your ability to walk as quietly and stealthily as possible.
Sterkfontein has miles of dirt roads and tracks, providing the ultimate setting for one to head off on a mountain bike trip to enjoy the natural surroundings. There is nothing better than riding through the open fields and viewing the zebra, wildebeest and other wild animals grazing in the plains.
No matter what level of rider, there will be a track or road to suit everyone’s ability. Mountain bikes as well as safety helmets are provided.
With nine permanent dams, open grass plains and mountainous areas, Sterkfontein is an ideal birding destination. There have been over 270 different bird species recorded in the area. Birding activities can be conducted from the game drive vehicle or on foot, allowing you to get up close to the “hot spots”.
