Motivational Talks with Sibusiso Vilane PDF Print E-mail

Sibusiso Vilane is an exceptional man. His achievements have firmly established him as one of Africa’s leading adventurers and explorers and these are all the more remarkable if one considers his background. From being the first black African to summit Mount Everest (twice), to trekking unaided to the South Pole and to becoming a member of the elite seven-summit club, Sibu truly is testimony to what the human spirit can achieve against considerable odds. He is now a highly accomplished motivational speaker and author with a passion for inspiring children to reach beyond the limitations of their immediate circumstances. His most recent commitment (after summiting Mount Kilimanjaro for the 6th time) was to deliver a talk to the Constitutional Court on Human Rights and the Environment.

In addition to exploring the most inaccessible corners of our planet, Sibu has an abiding passion for the bush and for conservation and he boasts 11 years experience in the ecotourism field. We are extremely proud to have Sibu on the Welgevonden team and he has already contributed enormously to the successful establishment of the WEI volunteer programme and the advancement of the Waterberg Rural EcoWarrior programme.

As a member of the Welgevonden family, Sibu has very kindly agreed to make himself available to the Welgevonden lodges two nights a week (i.e. after hours) to give after-dinner talks on his various adventures and engage with guests in around-the-fire discussions on his exploits. If you would like to book Sibu for such an engagement, please contact the Welgevonden office. Sibu is offering his services exclusively to the Welgevonden lodges at the extremely discounted rate of R2000.00 per evening. To find out more, contact us on: +27 14 755 4392.

Bushman Painting Guided Activity PDF Print E-mail

The movement of the Bushman into the Waterberg
There is very little evidence to suggest that the Bushmen (also known as the San) were living in the Waterberg more than 2500 years ago. Rather it is believed that the San moved into the area after the bantu speaking tribes moved here from West Africa. The prospect of trade, with the Bantu, was very attractive to the San because they had cattle and sheep, and later grain which they had brought with them into Southern Africa.

Who were the painters?
Bushman paintings do not show snapshots of desirable food or daily activities but rather it shows what a person has seen while he was in a trance and visiting their spiritual world. The Bushmen are very fond of their dancing (even today) and would practice their dancing as often as possible. Dancing was also used to drive out illness, control the movement of game and/or to make rain. During these dances some men will go into a trance and experience the spiritual world. They then used the paintings as a medium to show the rest of the group, and us, what they had seen and experienced.

What did they paint with?
Primarily the Bushman used ochre to paint with but also used iron oxides, white clay, crushed ostrich shells and in the last hundred years coal. They mixed various binders, such as egg white, plant sap and blood, into the paint to ensure that the paint would stick to the rock surface.

Guided activity at Welgevonden
Welgevonden offers guided tours to the bushman paintings at Welgevonden. During this activity you will be informed about the men who went into the trances and painted the paintings, why the paintings are painted in the different ways, how they danced for rain and much more.
This Bushmen Painting Guided Activity can be booked at the Main Gate Office, 014-755 4392, or you can contact Jarine Lorist at 082 779 9486 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it The lodge hosting the guests is responsible to supply a qualified and armed escort for the group that will be joined by Jarine. See you soon!
